About Earwax Problems

  • The accumulation of earwax, or cerumen, in the ear canal can lead to a blockage. Earwax is a natural substance produced by the glands in the ear canal to protect and lubricate the ear. Normally, it gradually moves from the ear canal to the opening of the ear, where it dries up, falls out, oxidises and disappears naturally.

  • However, some people may experience an overproduction of earwax or have difficulty with the natural process of wax expulsion. This can lead to a buildup of earwax in the ear canal, causing symptoms such as:

    • Hearing Loss: The blockage of the ear canal by excess earwax can interfere with sound waves reaching the eardrum, resulting in temporary hearing loss.

    • Earache: A blockage of earwax can cause pressure and discomfort in the ear, leading to earaches.

    • Tinnitus: In some cases, a buildup of earwax may contribute to the sensation of ringing or buzzing in the ears known as tinnitus.

    • Dizziness: Severe cases of earwax blockage might affect the balance mechanism in the inner ear, leading to dizziness.
